School Dance Discussion, and Upcoming AMS Events
October 24, 2024
Dear Azalea Middle School Parents and Guardians,
Thank you so much for reaching out and sharing your thoughts regarding the upcoming after-school dance planned for December 13th. We’ve received feedback with concerns about the dance, and we appreciate the time and care taken to express those concerns. Please continue to contact us directly with your questions or ideas.
Disappointment was expressed from a few parents regarding the decision not to host a formal or semi-formal Winter Dance this year for our middle schoolers. At this time, the school will be sticking to the plan to host an inclusive, casual, and festive after-school dance, rather than an evening formal event. As both school and district leaders, we feel confident that this plan is in alignment with our students’ best interests.
There are several key factors that led us to this conclusion. First and foremost, we want to ensure all students can enjoy the event without the social pressures often associated with formal attire and expectations. We are mindful that not all families are able to bear the costs associated with formal events, such as purchasing attire or arranging transportation back to school after buses have already departed. By holding a casual after-school dance several times each year, we are ensuring that all students can participate with less worry over financial or logistical burdens.
Our school has hosted a formal dance in the past, but after reflecting on that experience, we believe that there is value in preserving certain traditions for high school. Formal dances are an important part of the high school experience, and we want to give our students something special to look forward to later in their academic careers as well. Middle school can shine as a time for fun, friendship, and learning — without the social or romantic pressures that formal events can bring.
Another key consideration is staff and volunteer capacity. Our team of dedicated staff members already go above and beyond, often volunteering their time to ensure events like these are a success, such as our recent AMS Fall Carnival in collaboration with the Parent Teacher Organization. We must deploy these human resources mindfully throughout the year. A formal event requires a significant commitment, including extensive setup, chaperoning, and late-night cleanup. Night time events pose additional safety considerations..
Lastly, our primary mission is to support students’ academic and personal growth. This year, we feel that the casual after-school dance that is being planned will provide a fun and appropriate outlet for our students. We hope that you will support your student in going and if you wish to volunteer or contribute to the dance preparations, please contact the school office.
Thank you for allowing us to respond to this current concern in our school community. I would like to also take this opportunity to remind you to save the date for these additional upcoming events:
