November Updates: Mock Block Schedule, Turkey Trot and Cell Phone Policy

Dear Parent/Guardian
As we head into second quarter, I wanted to update you about a few things at AMS including the upcoming Mock Block schedule, the Turkey Trot, and the cell phone policy.
From November 28 until December 16, Azalea will be participating in a Mock Block Schedule with the high school. In a block schedule, students have fewer classes per day but longer class periods for the classes they do have. This allows teachers to cover content in more depth and students to work on bigger projects with adult support. Additionally, a "Flex Block" period is scheduled each Friday. During the Flex Block period, students will be scheduled by their grade level team to receive support to better meet their needs-whether that is more help in a subject or a greater challenge and extension of their learning. The three-week Mock Block is an example of this kind of schedule so the district can gather feedback from students, staff, and families as they make scheduling decisions in the future. If you have any questions about the Mock Block, please contact our office. A short survey will be sent to families at the conclusion of the three week block. The class schedule will return to the traditional ?-period day when we return from winter break.
The Turkey Trot is back! On Friday, November 18, students will have shorter class periods. After 7th period, students will go to their Pride class and then gather in the stadium for an afternoon of fun and games. While this event is not open to the public, we hope you will encourage your student to participate-and make sure they dress appropriately for the weather that day!
Here at Azalea, the cell phone policy is that cell phones are to be off and away except at lunch, before school, and after school. This includes being off and away during passing periods. Students need to keep their cell phones in their backpack or locker. Additionally, no photos or videos are to be taken while on campus, even during lunch, before school, or after school. Students who violate this policy will be asked to turn their cell phone over to a staff member. The first time this happens, students can pick up their cell phone in the office at the end of the school day. The second time this happens, a parent or guardian must pick up the cell phone from the office. After that, students will receive a major referral and could lose cell phone privileges on campus for 30 days or more, depending on the number of cell phone violations they have. Please note that students taking video or photos of other students without consent will be subject to a 2-day In School Suspension.
It is our pleasure to serve you and your student. Thank you for learning with us!
Sincerely,
Vickie Nigh, Principal
